Many positive changes were happening for the LGBTQ+ community but not everything was harmonious outside of Washington D.C. legalized marriage equality on the federal level for all 50 states. This policy prevented military service by people who were openly lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and could result in a dishonorable discharge for any service member who came out or was outed. The United States military policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was officially repealed in 2011.
